All’interno di una banda di malviventi, Little John T. 'Johnny' Sarto (Robinson) e Jack Buck (Bogart) lottano tra loro per ottenere il comando. Ma improvvisamente Sarto viene ferito e dopo essere stato deluso dalla fidanzata Florence 'Flo' Addams (Sothern), abbandona l’impresa e si rifugia in un convento.

Un gangster-movie non attento ai canoni del genere, a causa di una sceneggiatura poco ferma, mescola con troppa facilità sparatorie, amori, e problemi di religione. Il cast è il cuore del film, l’unica vera attrazione sono le due interpretazioni di Robinson e di Bogart. Uscì nelle sale il 7 giugno 1940.
