Commento

E' la prima serata degli Oscar, istituita per volere del presidente dell’Academy of Motion Picture Art and Science Douglas Fairbanks, che decise di dar luogo il 16 maggio 1929 nella Blossom Room dell’Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel di Los Angeles, tutto è all'insegna della confusione, non si sa bene come vadano le cose. C'era numero molto ristretto di partecipanti quasi un mini parti di 36 tavoli e una cerchia ristretta e limitata di personaggi. Le statuette quest'anno non vengono date, si procede alla consegna con delle targhe onorifiche. Due sono i problemi alla partenza: la votazione e i premiati. Si decide di votare i film usciti nell'anno si decise che i film in concorso fossero quelli usciti nelle sale dal 1 agosto 1927 al 31 luglio 1928, ma ben presto si ritrovarono dentro anche pellicole girate anni prima. Un altro problema sopraggiunse al momento della votazione: la giuria iniziò a raccogliere i voti e su quei fogli erano stati votati film antecedenti quelli stabiliti, furono votate pellicole come "Aurora" del 1925 e persino "Come vinsi la guerra" di Buster Keaton del 1926. I votanti non capiscono bene come avviene il voto, scelgono in diretta film e personaggi e si costringe i presentatori Douglas Fairbanks e William C.De Mille a rispiegare le regole e a tornare al voto. I votati, non sapendo quali risvolti abbia questa premiazione, decidono di non parteciparvi. Chi presenta la cerimonia è costretto a chiamarli a casa e a farli venire sul palco per ritirare il premio! Tra le curiosità va segnalata la doppia nomination a Charlie Chaplin, il quale, dapprima, ebbe due candidature come regista e attore per "Il circo" poi l'Academy decise diversamente, proponendogli non una sfida con gli altri artisti, ma di dargli un premio speciale per il lavoro svolto come regista, attore, sceneggiatore e produttore della sua opera. In alcune categorie si nominò e premiò la persona, ma omettendo il lavoro che aveva svolto...questa è la prima edizione non confezionata ad arte, perchè nessuno saprà mai cosa avverrà in futuro e quali risvolti personali avrà ricevere un premio che sta per entrare nella storia del cinema mondiale.
