Commento

Questa seconda edizione parte in maniera differente dalla precedente. Orario d'inizio è le 22.30 e questa volta è in diretta radio. Stranamente non vengono in antecedenza assegnate le nomination ma i giudici decidono in presa diretta per ogni categoria chi dovrà vincere la statuetta (per tutte le categorie di questa serata vale quanto riporta l'Academy: "There were no announcements of nominations, no certificates of nomination or honorable mention, and only the winners were revealed during the awards banquet on April 3, 1930. Though not official nominations, the additional names in each category, according to in-house records, were under consideration by the various boards of judges". Tutti riflettono su un fatto che il sonoro ha iniziato la sua vita e potrebbe comportare nuovi mutamenti sul piano commerciale e su quello professionale delle star e su questa considerazione il miglior film risulta essere quello che sfrutta a pieno le doti del sonoro: un musical. Naturalmente come ogni competizione umana che porta prestigio e onore nasce uno scandalo legato alla categoria miglior attrice, la vincitrice non piace e il film che interpreta non ha suscitato nessun interesse né di critica né di pubblico. Si scopre in seguito che chi vinse era la protetta dell’Academy, la quale istituzione a sua volta, per non perdere credibilità, cambia immediatamente il regolamento: le votazioni del prossimo anno dovranno essere imparziali, il gruppo di giudici si dovrà sciogliere e Louis B. Mayer, uno dei più potenti produttori di Hollywood, viene retrocesso come uno dei qualsiasi 300 votanti.
