Commento

Frank Capra divenne il nuovo neopresidente dell’Academy, ma si vide costretto a reinventare tutta la cerimonia perché i registi, gli attori, gli sceneggiatori, gli associati e i boss degli studios avevano deciso di dare forfait. Era il 5 marzo 1936 il Baltimore Hotel era più vuoto del solito, Capra comprò di sua tasca tutte le statuette da consegnare e s’inventò un premio speciale da dare a David W. Griffith, il quale ricevette il primo super applauso della storia degli Oscar. Un nuovo Award venne consegnato alla miglior coreografia. Mentre lo sceneggiatore Dudley Nichols si rifiutò di prendere la statuetta, intanto l’Associazione degli scioperati ammetteva il successo della protesta affermando in un conteggio in sala la sola presenza di 20 attori iscritti e 13 sceneggiatori, ma per Capra la maggior parte dei presenti e dei vincitori, secondo lui, era seduta al Baltimore!.
